Autumn Greetings!
As the summer season comes to an end and I complete reaping the harvest from my garden's bounty, my thoughts take me to the inner abundance and plenty individuals have been searching and striving for, for ages. Where do we find our spiritual bounty and how do we reap these blessings? For thousands of years, this question has been answered by the act of sacred pilgrimage.
People of many different cultures, faiths and traditions have been, at some time, called to perform the sacred act of pilgrimage. These pilgrims set forth on a journey to reconnect themselves to the divine, the earth, and their fellow brothers and sisters. On solitary missions as well as in groups, pilgrims are able to separate themselves from their daily routines and engross themselves in a deeply meditative state. Whether the road be an arduous one, with self sacrificing acts such as crawling the path on hands and knees and treading barefoot for days, or taking a more direct path to a sacred site for prayer and contemplation, each journey has resounding spiritual significance.
An excerpt from author and Tour Leader, Phil Cousineau's book The Art of Pilgrimage, describes pilgrimage beautifully: "For millennia, the cry in the heart for embarking upon a meaningful journey has been answered by pilgrimage, a transformative journey to a sacred center. It calls for a journey to a holy site associated with gods, saints, or heroes, or to a natural setting imbued with spiritual power, or to a revered temple to seek counsel. To people the world over, pilgrimage is a spiritual exercise, an act of devotion to find a source of healing, or even to perform a penance. Always, it is a journey of risk and renewal. For a journey without challenge has no meaning; one without purpose has no soul..."
