The Maya
 
The Maya Civilization is considered to be one of the best known great civilizations, rich in history, culture and expansion. The Maya were a highly advanced people who were experts in astronomy and mathematics, and who developed extremely accurate calendrical systems and detailed hieroglyphic writing. They formed well established societies with a solid religious and political structure and were also highly skilled farmers and masters in agriculture. The Maya constructed outstanding and elaborate architectural structures which included temples, pyramids, palaces and observatories, all built unfathomably without metal tools. They also created beautifully ornate jewellery, textiles, pottery and fascinating works of art, many of which are now housed in museums across the world, leaving us with tangible testimony of their enigmatic history.

Family life and spirituality were the core of Maya society. Their daily life, activities, rituals and ceremonies were inextricably linked to all things sacred. Their cardinal point directions, colours, plants, and numbers were rich with meaning and significance and closely related to their deities. The Maya had a deep respect for the natural world around them and developed an abundance of knowledge in plant and natural medicine. They acknowledged that spirit was in everything and revered the energies and guardians in their surrounding environment and worked with these spiritual elements throughout their daily life and in sacred rites.

Opposed to popular belief, the Maya never disappeared. During the time of the conquistadores and European settlers, some Maya elders learned to merge their past traditions and knowledge, holding the essence of the ancient Maya teachings to be passed on to us today. Many of their written records were burned and destroyed, however, fortunately much of their knowledge continued to be passed down orally through the generations and is available to us today, if we know where to look.

About Your Teachers


Founder and Teacher - Miguel Angel Vergara Calleros
Miguel Angel Vergara Calleros is a Mayan Cultural Teacher and leading authority on Chichen Itza and the pyramid of K'u-Kuul-Kaan. He is the author of several books on the Maya including two on Chichen Itza. He was Coordinator of Cultural Services for the Yucatán State Government and the Director of Chichen Itza for four years.

Miguel Angel studied for 17 years with Mayan elder, Don Vincente Martin, who was a wisdom keeper, professional teacher and artist. He then became a master in his own right, known as Master Nazul, and now teaches seminars in Mexico and abroad on Mayan astronomy, philosophy, calendar, glyphs and symbols, medicine, cosmovision, traditions and prayers, ceremonies and healing. Miguel Angel teaches us how to connect with the masters of light who are available to teach and guide us now, as in ancient times. He conducts tours to the Mayan sacred sites so that we can experience first-hand the powerful activating energies of those areas. His knowledge and experience make the journeys come alive as we begin to understand how the messages were imprinted, what the glyphs mean, how the buildings were used, and how the ceremonies were conducted.

Michele Maggiora, a professional artist and teacher originally from California, found her way to the Yucatan and the energy of the Mayas, three years ago. An artist since age three, she also has been a "seeker" of the spiritual for most of her adult life.  Now, the time of seeking is over. Now is the Time to act...to do the work of transformation. Along with transforming herself, she acts as a mentor/ teacher and intends that her visual art hold and project the light. "It is time to collapse the duality of matter and spirit - to infuse matter with the light. We are midwives helping to bring humanity into the vibration of God."

Course Description
 
Maya Summer Solstice Intensive This is an intensive program with Miguel Angel to connect deeply with the energies of the Solstice at Chichen Itza and activate our consciousness. There will be a limited number of participants all focusing on receiving the energy of the Sun, grounding it in the Earth, and learning how to live in harmony with our Mother Earth. Consciousness is to be present at the moment. The purpose of this workshop is the activation of our consciousness to bring forth a world of beauty, light, love, and harmony. Working with the Ancient Wisdom of the Maya, Miguel Angel will help us raise our vibration to activate our consciousness through teachings, ceremonies, meditations, visits to the site, and specific practices.

We find ourselves in an extremely imbalanced world, a world we created unconsciously. This is the point in time the Maya Calendars predicted. Upon completing a huge cycle of evolution we are now standing at the precipice, and being that we are all connected in oneness, we all affect and are being affected by the energies of the universe. Join us to learn to use the energies of the Solstice for the conscious creation of a world at peace and in harmony with Mother Earth. Course Summary Each day will be filled with teachings, visits to the site, meditations, ceremonies, practices, and more. Meet the rest of the group at breakfast this morning then head out to visit the Maya Sacred Caves of Balancanche with Miguel Angel. We will then travel on to Chichen Itza which will be your home for the next 5 days. After lunch, there will be a classroom session followed by our opening ceremony with Miguel Angel.

Early morning visit to the site including teachings and meditations with Miguel Angel. There will be time for personal exploration, lunch, then an afternoon class on how to use the energy of the Sun to activate our consciousness. This evening we meet to share insights, thoughts, and experiences.

Again early this morning, we will go to the site with Miguel Angel for more explanations and teachings. This afternoon the classroom work will focus on applying the Wisdom of the Maya in our everyday life. Joining Miguel Angel will be artist and speaker, Michele Maggiora who will share her experience of creating with consciousness. This evening is open for ceremony or sharing experiences.

We start the day with your third early morning visit to the site of Chichen Itza for further insights from Miguel Angel. This afternoon's classroom teachings will include practices to activate the 7 Chakras in preparation for tomorrow's Solstice Celebration. This evening is open for ceremony or sharing experiences.

Tuesday, June 21 (B, L)
Solstice Celebration at Chichen Itza. Join Miguel Angel in a special ceremony to connect with the energy of the Solstice, receiving the Sun, grounding it in the Earth, to create a new life. This will be followed by a farewell lunch and then you return to Merida in preparation for you flight home tomorrow.

Hotel Los Aluxes, Merida Hotel Los Aluxes is a lovely hotel located within walking distance from the historic centre, main square and the famous Paseo de Montejo.  The hotel rooms are equipped with air conditioning, cable colour TV, bathroom with tub and shower and hairdryers.  The hotel also houses The Kaynicte Restaurant which offers delicious regional, national, and international cuisine and is also renowned for the best buffet breakfast in the city. Mayaland Hotel & Bungalows The greatest city of the Itza Maya is a place of wonder and magic and at Mayaland, you'll feel its heartbeat.  Mayaland was the first hotel built at Chichen Itza (in 1923) and, with it superb location amidst the temples, the first within an ancient site in the world.  In a way it is as much a landmark as the pyramids that tower above it.  Mayaland is a creation of Old Yucatan, built and operated by its original owners and descendants, in a style reminiscent of the hacienda nobility of a century ago.
