Reflections on the Crystal Skull Activation, Sep, 2003
By Mark Amaru Pinkham

Between September 15-24, 2003 our small group of intrepid Crystal Skull Carriers marched through the hot and humid jungles of Mexico with a mission to activate some of the most ancient Maya temple sites. Leading the charge was our Lancandon Mayan priest, Cayum, and Star Johnsen-Moser, the caretaker of Shama-Ku, a lifesized crystal skull.

After our initial meeting in Cancun with groups who were assigned various sacred sites in Mayaland to activate, our group of ten skull carriers from the US came together with Star, Dawn Abel, and a group of German crystal skull warriors, for the long journey to Palenque, which would serve as the central base from which we would travel to the Mayan sites we were assigned to activate as a group.

Our first destination, Tonina, was home to a lofty pyramidal temple and an underworld labyrinth. It was here that the Mayan priests apparently contacted the spirits of the underworld, leaving behind visions of their macabre experiences as the large reliefs of skeletons and underworld deities which can be found decorating the various levels of the Tonina pyramid. Most of us either felt the darkness of the underworld at Tonina and/or a distinctly miltaristic presence pervading the site, which continues to be perpetuated and enhanced by a modern army base near the ruins. Consequently, this was not a favorite site for most of the group.

Following our activation ceremony at Tonina, we traveled to a Maya temple site with the exact opposite energy as Tonina. This was Yaxchilan, a site which our group now affectionately remembers as the residence of the loving and nurturing energy of the Goddess. To get to Yaxchilan, we boated down the Usumacinta River, the same river where the great Mayan sage Pacal Votan had navigated thousands of years before on his way to founding the temple city of Palenque. Once at Yaxchilan, we were lead by our Mayan priest through a dark corridor and up a tall hill to the foot of a temple once inhabited by the last Jaguar-bird priest king of Yaxchilan. Here our activation rite was held, while all around us pint-sized howler monkeys made intimidating cries that sounded like the deafening roar of giant man-eating mountain lions perparing to make lunch out of our defenseless little group. Only sounded like......we all made it home!

The culmination of our activation activities occurred on September 21 at Palenque, home to numerous Mayan temples, including the spectacular pyramid tomb of Pacal Votan. Once at Palenque, it became obvious to many of us that we were in one of the most sacred sites in the entire world, and that its patron and guardian, Pacal Votan, was one of the most important spiritual masters that has ever lived. While feeling the all-pervasive presence of Pacal at Palenque, we began to feel twinges of the extreme honor that had been placed upon our shoulders and the beckoning call to alter the ambient energy of all Mayaland.

At 12 Noon on the Fall Equinox we gathered around our altar of crystal skulls that was oriented in the direction of Calakmul, a centrally located Maya sacred site where Mayan Elder Hunbatz Men and other Mayan priests were waiting to receive the energy from Palenque that we would send them. For one hour we sat in silence with our hearts and minds focused on the skulls that we had brought them to accomplish this work of activation. While sitting on a stone staircase above the skulls, I placed my shaman staff in the direction of the energy flow and was immediately impressed by the amount of energy flowing through it. It was literally shaking with power. I also percieved what appeared to be an etheric serpent moving through an adjacent stone wall. In an intutive flash the knowledge came to me that this was Pacal Votan, who had become pure energy and was now assisting the movement of energy to Calakmul. While alive, Pacal was known as "He of the Serpent Lineage" and his home of Palenque was Nah Chan, the "Serpent House," so his current manifestation as an undulating serpent certainly made sense.

When we returned to Cancun a couple of days later and shared our collective experiences, it was obvious that it did not matter which Maya site you had been assigned to on September 21, you were destined to have a special experience and play a special role in the activation. It was then that I realized the importance of what we had all accomplished. I felt in my heart that we had come together to expedite the onset of a new Golden Age in Mayaland, and perhaps the entire world.

Body Mind Spirit Journeys will be offering a tour to Palenque and some of the surrounding Mayan temple sites on the Spring Equinox of 2004. Hunbatz Men will be directing rituals designed specifically to further activate Palenque and receive from Pacal Votan some of the ancient Mayan wisdom, including that of Kundalini activation, which is needed now for planetary activation. Pacal Votan is regarded today as one of the greatest Kundalini masters in Maya history.

A Worldwide Network of Maya Mystery Schools
While I was in Mayaland last month for the Crystal Skull activiations, Hunbatz Men periodically talked to me about his dream for a planetary network of mystery schools that would teach a cirruculum of equality between the sexes. He envisioned that such schools would ultimately influence and transform the social fabric of the countries they resided in, and that each country would eventually have a balance of male and female officials governing it.

Hunbatz already has such a network of mystery schools in place, operating in such diverse countries as Austrialia, South Africa, and England, but he wants more. Now he has one in Sedona, AZ, as well; the Mysteries of the Goddess Wisdom School is now officially a member of the worldwide web of Maya Mystery Schools. This does not mean that it will teach a purely Maya curriculum. In fact, this is not what Hunbatz wants for any of his mystery schools. Each will be run not by him, but by those who create them, and they will teach a synthesis of spiritual traditions from around the world. Hunbatz's own mystery school, which will eventually be a small intentional community in the Yucatan, will also be an amalgamation of various traditions.

The Mysteries of the Goddess Wisdom School will assimilate the teachings of the Maya, just as it has and will assimilate and teach the wisdom of all traditions that are or have been part of the ancient Goddess Tradition. We will, however, be putting more emphasis on the Maya calender, and other aspects of Maya ritual and wisdom than we have done in the past. And we will be offering more tours through Body Mind Spirit Journeys (Sacred Earth Journeys in Canada) into Mayaland for special Maya events, initiations, and teachings with Hunbatz Men and the Mayan Elders. We have planned a tour for September 2004 to Merida and the surrounding area in the Yucatan, where we will participate in the first worldwide conference of Maya Mystery Schools. As part of this tour, we will be visiting some of the Maya sacred sites for special ritual.
