Virginia Schenck, VA, is an accomplished international jazz vocalist and vocal artist who often spices up her shows with world music influences from her own vocal exploration and of CircleSinging which she studied under legendary Bobby McFerrin and his Voicestra member, Rhiannon. In her retreats, Virginia brings the same immediacy and emotional connectivity brought to her work as a performing artist.
VA (born Virginia Schenck) grew up in Florida and became an internationally-known music therapist. She made some of her first public performances with a jazz ensemble that featured Jaimoe, drummer for the legendary Allman Brothers Band. After moving to Atlanta, VA became active on the local jazz scene and eventually put her own band together. Her debut CD, VA, generated serious buzz with jazz fans, receiving global airplay. Her CD, Interior Notions, followed similar suit. In addition to her singing career, VA also created vocal soundscapes for The Gift, a play staged at the ACT Theatre in Seattle and at the Drama League in New York, which featured free-improvised music at every performance. She collaborated on a 24-hour multi-art celebration called Singing Darwin at Virginia Tech and with aerial dancers at the Robert Mondavi Center/UC-Davis.
In recent years, VA has drawn inspiration from CircleSinging, an ancient tribal technique based on repetition and rhythm in a spontaneously improvised choral style made contemporary by Bobby McFerrin. With a background in Music Therapy and Applied Mythology, VA’s therapeutic work of SoulSong Circle using improvisation is published in the International Dictionary of Music Therapy. In her retreats, VA inspires others to resonate with the nature of the environment and voice forth.
