Vocal artist Virginia Schenck will be leading a unique singing retreat<\/a> to Ireland in October 2018. Here, Virginia tells us why Ireland is an ideal destination for such a journey, what participants can expect from this vocal adventure, and what the presence of the renowned Irish musician No\u0301iri\u0301n Ni\u0301 Riain will bring to this singing retreat.<\/p>\n

SEJ<\/em><\/strong>: What makes Ireland such an ideal destination for a singing journey?<\/em><\/p>\n

Virginia Schenck:<\/strong> Ireland can\u2019t seem to help but to hold on to its historical soul despite the continual globalization of our world. The expressions of her people \u2013 especially through music \u2013 ring from the core of their beings, seeming to resonate from the ground itself. On recent visits I have been struck by the openness with which people break into song in the midst of daily living. This freedom makes me question formalized concerts\u00a0for\u00a0which\u00a0one must set a date, obtain a seat, and pay a fee for the listening.<\/p>\n

SEJ: You will be joined by a very special guest in Ireland \u2013 what will\u00a0<\/em>No\u0301iri\u0301n Ni\u0301 Riain\u2019s presence bring to the singing retreat? How will she work with participants?
\n<\/em>
\nVirginia Schenck:<\/strong> Renowned musician and musical historian, No\u0301iri\u0301n unites an often disjoined sacred and secular paradigm. She published a book\u00a0Theosony: Listening with the ear of the heart<\/em><\/a>, a topic\u00a0which will greatly enrich the mission of our musical spiritual journey. She will spend [one] and half days of the trip with us, lecturing and leading our group in song and chant. As a group we will reenact a Druid ritual at Lough Gur, the oldest and largest stone circle in the British Isles, and [enjoy a guided tour of Glenstall Abbey grounds led by No\u0301iri\u0301n]. In addition, No\u0301iri\u0301n will introduce us to \u201ckeening\u201d (the ancient wailing of the dead), songs of the goddess \u2013 and later Sainted \u2013 Brigid and Creation, and the wisdom of poets and bards throughout history.<\/p>\n

SEJ: What can singers expect from this journey to Ireland \u2013 how will it help them on their own \u201cvocal journey\u201d?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Virginia Schenck:<\/strong> The goal of the Voices of Ireland is to provide opportunity for participants to reflect musically on their sense of self and community as well as expression. Being in a culture outside of our day-to-day life allows us to open our ears to new sounds during the journey and beyond. I find that I am always informed when rubbing up against other cultures and their customs.\u00a0Rules and conditioned listening drop off and I am more open to absorb new sounds.\u00a0Singers and artists of all types are constantly seeking inspiration.\u00a0What better way than to explore through other cultures, singing in community, and having the opportunity to expand your vocal and sensory options?<\/p>\n

You can talk, you can sing.\u00a0It\u2019s all a journey.\u00a0What do you sound like now?\u2026 and now?<\/p>\n

SEJ: What does singing mean to you? Has your relationship with your own voice changed over the years?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Virginia Schenck:<\/strong> Singing is both the extraordinary and the ordinary; through giving voice to my life, I can sing the valleys and high places, the \u201cecstasy” and “the laundry\u201d to quote Jack Kornfield.\u00a0I am always humming internally.\u00a0It\u2019s vibrational. I feel that within no matter where I am, but it is amplified when I visit sacred places like Ireland.\u00a0It resonates with me, and I resonate with it.<\/p>\n

I instinctually felt this connection to music as a young girl. My outward success took me to music school, practicing as a music therapist, and performing.\u00a0I continue to explore more ways to integrate music into all aspects of my life, especially the spiritual realm.\u00a0I am inspired by the nature of cultures outside my own that have held so closely to practices of music as a means of relating to everyday life. I never expect to arrive at a destination, but to remain curious, take what I learn, and keep singing!<\/p>\n

SEJ: Are there any aspects of the journey or any sacred sites that you\u2019re particularly looking forward to?<\/em><\/p>\n

Virginia Schenck:<\/strong> I am excited about every part of our trip! \u2013 from exploring the centuries of Irish culture through Neolithic sites to evenings at local pubs. \u00a0Every minute should bring unexpected riches.<\/p>\n

I hope you will join me in seeking to reintegrate music into your everyday spiritual being.<\/p>\n
