Two places very sacred to me, influencing my life and spiritual path, are India and Sri Lanka.&nbsp;My early years in India shaped my sense of unity with all religions. The sights, smells, and sounds of India are like no others. It is quite simply the most transformative place on earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sacredearthjourneys.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Image-1-1-685x455.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2761 img-responsive \" width=\"604\" height=\"401\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sacredearthjourneys.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Image-1-1-685x455.jpg 685w, https:\/\/www.sacredearthjourneys.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Image-1-1-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.sacredearthjourneys.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Image-1-1-768x510.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.sacredearthjourneys.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Image-1-1.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 604px) 100vw, 604px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>My favorite place is Benares, also known as Varanasi. It is on the banks of the Ganges river and a major religious hub. Buddha is believed to have founded Buddhism here when he gave his first sermon in nearby Samath. Varanasi has been my sacred home for 40 years. Hindus believe that dying here and getting cremated along the banks of the holy Ganges river allows one to break the cycle of life, death, and rebirth and attain salvation. Varanasi is also an important cultural and creative center in India, well known for its silk fabrics, perfumes, ivory works, and sculpture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"685\" height=\"457\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sacredearthjourneys.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Image-2-685x457.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2757 img-responsive \" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sacredearthjourneys.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Image-2-685x457.jpg 685w, https:\/\/www.sacredearthjourneys.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Image-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.sacredearthjourneys.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Image-2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.sacredearthjourneys.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Image-2.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 685px) 100vw, 685px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The stunningly beautiful island of Sri Lanka in South Asia is worthy of spiritual pilgrimage. Sri Lanka&#8217;s documented history spans 3,000 years, with evidence of prehistoric human settlements dating back at least 125,000 years.Its traditions run deep in Buddhist meditation, art, and ayurvedic healing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"685\" height=\"388\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sacredearthjourneys.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Image-3-685x388.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2758 img-responsive \" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sacredearthjourneys.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Image-3-685x388.jpg 685w, https:\/\/www.sacredearthjourneys.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Image-3-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.sacredearthjourneys.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Image-3-768x436.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.sacredearthjourneys.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Image-3.jpg 1400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 685px) 100vw, 685px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Sri\nLanka remains not only one of the most surreally beautiful places on earth but\nalso one of the most authentically magical, a place where the refined and\nexalted vision of both Buddhism, and to a lesser extent Hinduism, has created a\nsacred culture of great beauty that is still vibrant and alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I had expected to be excited by the beauty of the country; I had not expected the beauty of Sri Lanka\u2019s beaches and ruins and green flowering hills to be so astounding that it began to birth in me a wholly new and praise-filled relationship with the creation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"685\" height=\"457\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sacredearthjourneys.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Image-4-685x457.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2759 img-responsive \" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sacredearthjourneys.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Image-4-685x457.jpg 685w, https:\/\/www.sacredearthjourneys.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Image-4-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.sacredearthjourneys.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Image-4-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.sacredearthjourneys.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Image-4.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 685px) 100vw, 685px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You owe it to yourself to experience the people, traditions, food, and cultures of places like Sri Lanka and India.
