Sacred Earth Journeys has lately been on a bit of a Joseph Campbell kick. Is that surprising? His work embodies the Sacred Earth Journeys mission of mythological education and personal transformation. We\u2019re endlessly delighted at all the Joseph Campbell books and quotes teaching our pilgrims that we too are heroes in this world full of labyrinthine journeys and prospective transformation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Better yet, his work inspires the physical manifestation of taking the hero\u2019s journey, that is, taking an actual trip abroad<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s also worth mentioning as we have in previous articles that our veteran journey leader Phil Cousineau was personally mentored by Campbell. This inspired his book The Hero\u2019s Journey: Joseph Campbell on His Life and Work<\/a>. Eventually (and undoubtedly inspired by this idea of journeying and pilgrimage) Phil wrote The Art of Pilgrimage: The Seeker’s Guide to Making Travel Sacred<\/a>. The third edition of what\u2019s become a timeless classic is being released in September or October of 2021. Keep an eye out for that!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So we have plenty of reasons to be excited by Joseph Campbell. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So far we\u2019ve tinkered with Joseph Campbell quotes<\/a>, the power of myth<\/a> (included in the collection on Joseph Campbell books, more on that later), and the hero\u2019s journey we all need to take<\/a> (basically how to use Campbell\u2019s wisdom and mythological interpretation to fuel our own lives). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And now we\u2019re thrilled to explore Campbell\u2019s literature. In doing so we\u2019ll naturally draw parallels between his mission and our own. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Power of Myth<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As promised, here\u2019s our review of The Power of Myth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Power of Myth is based on a PBS documentary called Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth filmed with Bill Moyers in the 1980s. The book is essentially a transcript of the interviews held between Campbell and Moyers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This book is profoundly loved among readers and arguably loved most compared to other Joseph Campbell books. Readers love the work\u2019s ability to access the meaning and essence of life through mythology itself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the interviews, Campbell discusses what he calls \u201cthe soul’s high adventure\u201d:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFollow your bliss. . .The world is a wasteland. People have this notion of saving the world by shifting it around and changing the rules. No. Any world is a living world if it\u2019s alive. The way to bring it alive is to find in your own case where your life is and be alive yourself, it seems to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To live your bliss (your hero\u2019s journey that\u2019s meant for you) and inspire others to do the same is the ultimate force for change. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One thing that especially inspires us about Campbell\u2019s work is his emphasis on courage and transformation. \u201cDon\u2019t be afraid [to follow your bliss],\u201d he says in the interview. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the type of courage (and transformation) people leave with after their sacred journeys with us around the world. They\u2019ve experienced the art of pilgrimage, as Phil would say, and are ready to return home to make their entire lives a pilgrimage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Hero With A Thousand Faces<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Reading Campbell\u2019s The Hero With a Thousand Faces can be super handy before attending any of our journeys. Our pilgrimages, especially those to Greece<\/a> and Italy<\/a>, are chalked full of mythological interpretation, tales, and imagery. They’re also both led by Phil Cousineau (Campbell would be proud)!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Hero With a Thousand Faces is the primary text where Campbell presents his archetypal hero\u2019s journey or monomyth cycle. The idea is strikingly fascinating. Campbell realized that throughout time and space, cultures have created stories that follow similar trends\u2014even if the cultures in question had come in zero contact with each other. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Supported by Jung\u2019s theory of the collective unconscious (shared structures of the unconscious mind among same species) and dream theory (dreams provide unconscious expression), Campbell published his masterpiece in 1949. The chapters are the phases of Campbell\u2019s mythological cycle where stories from all over the world swim in each.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The phases include departure (of the hero), initiation, and return. Each chapter is divided into the more specific pivotal points on the hero\u2019s journey as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chapter 1: Departure <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. The Call to Adventure<\/em><\/li>
  2. Refusal of the Call<\/em><\/li>
  3. Supernatural Aid <\/em><\/li>
  4. The Crossing of the First Threshold<\/em><\/li>
  5. The Belly of the Whale <\/em><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Chapter 2: Initiation<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. The Road of Trials<\/em><\/li>
    2. The Meeting with the Goddess<\/em><\/li>
    3. Woman as the Temptress<\/em><\/li>
    4. Atonement with the Father<\/em><\/li>
    5. Apotheosis<\/em><\/li>
    6. The Ultimate Boon<\/em><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      Chapter 3: Return<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      1. Refusal of the Return<\/em><\/li>
      2. The Magic Flight <\/em><\/li>
      3. Rescue from Without<\/em><\/li>
      4. The Crossing of the Return Threshold<\/em><\/li>
      5. Master of the Two Worlds<\/em><\/li>
      6. Freedom to Live<\/em><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

        Readers are astounded at the sheer amount of tails Campbell draws upon in each section, as well as the capacity for each one to fit snugly into each archetypal section. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Myths to Live By<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

        And then there is Campbell\u2019s Myths to Live By. To give you an idea of the potency of this book, here\u2019s the subtitle: \u201cHow we recreate ancient legends in our daily lives to release human potential\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

        This is a great book to start with for readers who are only just delving into Campbell\u2019s world. With it, Campbell tugs myth into our worlds as a transformational force. Take this quote from the book for instance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        \u201cThe society that cherishes and keeps its myths alive will be nourished from the soundest, richest strata of the human spirit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        That’s because myth (which according to Campbell always fosters the hero within) inspires us to live out our own destinies:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        \u201cSince you came to birth in this world at this time, in this place, and with this particular destiny, it was this indeed that you wanted and required for your own ultimate illumination. That was a great big wonderful thing that you thereupon brought to pass: not the \u2018you\u2019 of course, that you now suppose yourself to be, but the \u2018you\u2019 that was already there before you were born.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        After all, if Joseph Campbell\u2019s work has meant anything to use over the decades, it\u2019s that \u201cmyths are public dreams, dreams are private myths.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        We are the heroes of our realities. As soon as we choose to live out our myth, the world with its initiations, trials, atonements, etc. will always open its vast arms in renunciation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
