The Spiritual Significance of Rumi<\/div>\n
Coleman Barks, who has been translating Rumi\u2019s works into accessible, \u201clively American free verse\u201d since the late 1970s perfectly sums up Rumi\u2019s universal spiritual appeal in a piece for the Huffington Post<\/a>:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

\u201cRumi very consciously made himself and his poetry a bridge between cultures and between religions. There is nothing exclusivist about him. He includes everyone in his embrace. He was, and is, a healer of whatever might separate us.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

That healing comes from and pushes the reader towards a place of enlightenment, a place of expansion, not only of our own capacity for love but also of our understanding of our relationship with earthly reality.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

Love in both Sufism and Rumi\u2019s works is a freeing experience. As Barks said in an interview<\/a><\/span>\u00a0with Andrew Lawler, \u201c[Love is] beyond our ideas of mentoring or romance or even friendship. It\u2019s a place beyond the synapse of relationship. \u2018Fall in love in such a way that it frees you from any connecting,\u2019 Rumi said. All his poetry is about love as a region, not a relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

To conceive of love on this level, of course, takes daily spiritual work and a process of inner transformation.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

The Threshold Society, a Foundation rooted within the traditions of Sufism and inspired by the life and work of Mevl\u00e2na Jal\u00e2ludd\u00een Rumi, say this about Sufism<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span>:<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

\u201cSufism is above all about the inner transformation of the human being, resulting in increased capacities of presence, will, and love. Its stock-in-trade is marifa<\/i>, inner knowing, through which the heart is purified\u2026\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/div>\n
A purified heart, then, enables us to transcend categories, emotions, religions, our own bodies to a place of enlightened being.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Rumi moved with his family to Konya in present-day Turkey when he was a young child and died in his bed there in 1273. The Mevlana Museum in Konya is a natural place of pilgrimage for all those, from all \u2013 and no \u2013 religions, touched by Rumi\u2019s compassion, wisdom, humour and poetic skill. This World Which Is Made of Our Love for Emptiness<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Praise to the emptiness that blanks out existence. Existence: <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
This place made from our love for that emptiness!<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span>Yet somehow comes emptiness, <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
this existence goes.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span>Praise to that happening, over and over! <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
For years I pulled my own existence out of emptiness.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span>Then one swoop, one swing of the arm, <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
that work is over.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span>Free of who I was, free of presence, free of dangerous fear, hope, <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
free of mountainous wanting.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span>The here-and-now mountain is a tiny piece of a piece of straw <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
blown off into emptiness.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span>These words I’m saying so much begin to lose meaning: <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
Existence, emptiness, mountain, straw:<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

out the window, down the slant of the roof.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
