A pilgrimage can be defined as a ‘long journey or search’. But the word ‘pilgrimage’ can denote even more: yes, something beyond the physical journey itself. A true pilgrimage is a journey to a holy, sacred place. Finding the right path to a meaningful pilgrimage is an important factor. Part of the act is simply removing yourself from your everyday life. But there is more to it. When you replace your familiar scenery with the presence of sacred sites full of power and deep meaning, that travel can turn into a miraculous act of positive transformation.
Sacred Journey tour leader and best-selling author Phil Cousineau put it well in his book, ‘The Art of Pilgrimage’:
“Pilgrimage is a spiritual exercise, an act of devotion to find a source of healing, or even to perform a penance. Always, it is a journey of risk and renewal. For a journey without challenge has no meaning; one without purpose has no soul…”
Interestingly, one definition of a vacation is: ‘A period of time devoted to pleasure, rest, or relaxation.’ On a Sacred Journey, pleasure, rest and relaxation are a dividend reaped bountifully; one that reaches far beyond the ‘vacation’ itself.
